Marshall MG15DFX Review

Good Points: I use it in my home recording studio because it can be mic'd or run stright into a mixer/PC setup. The sound is great for a small amp and definitely Marshall, but with more gain available if required.

Has basic, but good sounding built in effects although only one can be used at a time. I love the sound of this amp on it's own.

Bad Points: This amp does not seem to work well with effects pedals. I use a Boss ME20 and the sound is aweful and dirty for the most part even though I only run the effects through the clean channel.

However, it is possible that the blame lies with the ME20 effects pedal. Although the amp has great built in gain, it will never give you a good thrash metal/death metal type sound if that's what you're looking for. It's good for everything else though.

General comments: I like this amp very much for it's versatility as a practice amp and for use in a small home studio atmosphere. It's got built-in effects which sound much better than pedal effects I've run through it, a button to turn the amp into "tube" simulator mode giving the amp a much brighter tone, direct output to mixers, and inputs for headphones, as well as another button to switch the amp between clean and distorted channels.

However, I wish that the folks at Marshall had put in a foot switch option for changing between the clean and gain channels.

Roland KC-350 Review

Good Points: 120w amp suitable for medium size gigs whose sound cuts through really well. 4-channel stereo inputs - can be daisy chained to another KC350 for true stereo if desired.

Good bass response from single cone. Has never let me down yet! Very rugged - sensible choice of materials keep the amp in good nick.

Can be thrown in the back of the gig van without too many worries.

Bad Points: Not the heaviest amp out there by some way, but it's quite a weight. Should have a cover if stored in garage.

General comments: The Roland KC-350 keyboard amp is an excellent all rounder! It can be used as a PA as well as a keyboard amp. One XLR mic input provided. Stereo line out is also available if you want to send your sound through the front PA.

Marshall AVT 100 Review

Good Points: 100W 3-channel with nice DFX and tube-driven preamp, very good emulated out!

Bad Points: You can't use an additive speaker cabinet - that's a pity if you don't use a p.a.

General comments: The preamp uses a 12AX7 tube and the power amp section emulates the way tube amps breathe and musically compress the sound. The Marshall AVT 100 amp sounds very authentic and tube-like without the higher costs of an all-tube amplifier. The tonal range from clear, crystal clean to valve-induced crunch and on to the most extreme gain gives you all you need. Vintage oriented and even newer sounds are possible, although an AVT simply can't be a Rectifier.

The speaker-emulated line out works very well if you need some more power over a p.a. - therefore you don't really need an additive cabinet. A very easy concept for the effects give you quick and effective control!

The supplied 4-way LED foot-switch is comfortable for your sound changes. What I like the most is the interaction with the volume knob of the guitar - from crunch to lead - very much like an all-tube amp.

The most serious piano teachers will adamantly point their students in the direction of an acoustic piano. For serious piano studying, I agree with this completely for reasons I will discuss shortly. But for many reasons, a genuine handcrafted instrument may not be the best choice for you. With the affordability, portability, and the many features that come with digital pianos, you may wish to head the other way. Summarily, the question of acoustic versus digital boils down to a matter of authenticity versus everything else.

Mostly, the drawbacks of an acoustic piano are matters of practicality, such as price. For what you could get a new, decent quality digital piano with, you’ll be dealing with a rather meager acoustic. This can encompass a number of problems. For instance, aside from any tuning it might need, the overall sound quality of a cheap acoustic piano can be quite poor. This may not just be an issue of old strings, but can result from an infinite number of possible factors arising from any of the complex mechanics of the piano being in disrepair.

Other common problems of old pianos are broken keys and sticky keys, which is when the keys fail to spring up the way they should. There may also be faults with the framework that can range from nuisances to impending hazards. The trouble of a bad acoustic continues indefinitely, and the piano may need a decent amount of initial maintenance, in addition to periodic maintenance, which is likely to pull a few additional large bills out of your wallet right way. Also, because of its bulk and weight, an acoustic may be a very difficult accommodation for people living in tight or elevated spaces, such as dorm rooms and certain city apartments. Some buildings may even prohibit pianos, particularly on floors above the ground level because the weight and bulk of pianos make them quite cumbersome and possibly hazardous to either the tenants or the buildings themselves. This raises the issue of portability as well. Do you gig? Do you relocate frequently?

Toting a 500 pound upright piano isn’t possible for most people; moving one across the room is a challenge for most people. If your music needs to be ready to go, your hulking wooden companion is not going to be sympathetic. Acoustic pianos also lack the many features present in digital pianos nowadays that may be valuable tools to you. For example, volume control may be necessary in dormitory, or close living, situations. Newer digitals also come with a suite of onboard functions, including on-the-fly recording, voice customization, electronic metronome, and even music mixing features, which you won’t have. You will also lack the benefit of porting your music to your PC; a simple MIDI connector would feed your performance directly into your computer’s audio card without any ambient noise or loss of sound quality, which will probably beat any recording made with an acoustic piano and consumer grade recording hardware available at a neighborhood electronics store. With an acoustic, you will surely be at, at least, some degree of inconvenience.

Still, despite the great deal of effort digital piano makers have put into their product, none have been able to truly reproduce the sound and feel of a good acoustic piano. First, lets talk about the piano sound. To most people, casual or occasional listeners of piano music, the resulting sounds between an acoustic piano and a digital piano are quite identical and equally satisfactory musically. But listen closely, because there is an important difference. A digital piano outputs high quality recordings of the sounds that were made by a real piano at one time. During the process of making a digital piano, each key of a real concert grand piano is struck a number of times at varying velocities and recorded with sophisticated equipment to be used as the digital voice. This will give the digital piano a sufficient range of tonality and an overall likeness to the sound of an acoustic piano in varying music dynamics.

But once the notes have been recorded and finally integrated with the digital piano’s voicing mechanism, they are never going to be changed. Even though the aesthetic quality of the sound is state of the art, it is the way the sounds should behave but cannot because they are fixed recordings that is the fundamental problem of digital pianos. An acoustic piano uses a complex array of hammers, strings, a soundboard, and other moving parts that function in collaboration. This means that when any note is played, it is not played with entire independence, but is highly affected by the current state of the surrounding components of the piano. For example, playing a chord on a digital piano will simply result in three notes being played, as they were recorded individually, at the same time, whereas with an acoustic piano, the three notes will interact with each other through the soundboard and become a stew of vibrations, producing a different, more complex, and ultimately richer sound. Lacking this quality, what comes out of digital speakers will typically be quite boring and unsatisfactory to aficionados of the true piano tone. An acoustic piano is also an analog instrument, which means is has virtually infinite range. For example, there is no limit to the loudness or softness a note may be played on an acoustic piano. With digital pianos, there is a point at which a minimum or maximum will be achieved. This means there will be occasions when you will not be able to play a note as softly or as loudly as you wish. In order words, true pppp or ffff are probably beyond the reach of digital pianos without you resorting to adjusting the volume dial while you’re performing.

Even if you were to do that, the tonal quality of the notes would remain static from that point on, when it would further continue to dull or brighten on an acoustic piano. Another problem of digital devices is the matter of intervals. In photography, for example, pixels are the intervals. With a traditional film camera, the amount of detail you are able to capture is theoretically unlimited because film is a single and continuous malleable body. The “film” of a digital camera is not single or continuous but is a multitude of pixels, each of which is only able to record a solid block of color. The amount of detail a digital camera is able to capture will depend on the how small the pixels are and how tightly they’re packed together. If the pixels, or intervals, are small enough and packed tight enough, the amalgam of the blocks of color they record will appear to be smooth curves and gradients to the human eye.

There is a similar issue of intervals with digital pianos, which is mainly the issue of touch sensitivity. Digital pianos have a finite number of intervals when it comes to key pressure. The more intervals there are and the closer they are to each other, the more realistically the piano will respond to your dynamics. High end digital pianos will have quite a lot of them. But digital pianos within the means of average shoppers may not have sufficient sensitivity. This means that while the vast difference between piano and forte may be noticeable, the most intricate variances of touch pressure may be disregarded.

This will be quite a nuisance to pianists seeking a highly responsive instrument, particularly when it comes to meticulous classical music. It also manifests in pedaling. Piano pedals are ranged. Between simple on and off, or up and down, there are degrees. Half-pedaling and quarter-pedaling are crude terms describing the manner of pedaling in which the pedal is only pressed partially down in order to create an intermediate effect. For instance, rather than completely depressing the pedal so that the full brilliance of a note is sustained, you may wish to depress it only half way to dampen about half of the note and let only the remainder of it sustain for a subtler, suppressed quality. Certainly a scrupulous pianist will wish to employ the complete range of pedaling available to him, which may not be represented entirely accurately in a digital piano. Aside from sound, as mentioned previously, key touch is also an important issue. Digital piano makers these days have gone to great lengths to reproduce the feel of acoustic pianos. For the most part, they’ve done a good job. They’ve even gone as far as implementing graded hammer action, which is in line with the hammers of acoustic pianos gradually becoming lighter from left to right. As a matter of fact, if you could take a look at the inner workings of a digital piano, you would be quite surprised and impressed with the complexity of the hammer mechanics.

However, as long as digital pianos look the way they do, being the shape and size they are, there is going to be a limit as to how authentically the key feel can be made. The hammers on a digital piano are simply extensions of the pianist’s fingers. When the pianist presses a key down, it will raise the opposing lever, which touches the electronic pad inside the piano that serves as the string. The hammers on an acoustic piano do not behave this way. Instead of being extensions of the pianist’s fingers, they are rather like projectiles that are sprung toward the strings high above them. Imagine the carnival game where you must hit a pad on the ground with a mallet, which flings a projectile up the meter towards the bell at the very top.

The finger is the mallet, the visible piano key is the pad, the hammer inside the piano is the projectile, and the string is the bell. First of all, this means if you press a key all the way down but not with the minimum amount of force needed, the projectile hammer will never leave its seating and the string will actually never be struck. Secondly, this launch-pad-like action feels quite different than the seesaw-like action of digital piano hammers. The only way this can truly be reproduced in a digital piano is by the use of bona-fide acoustic hammers. And there’s nothing wrong with doing that. But the problem is there isn’t enough room for them inside the compact size of most of the digital pianos today.

That’s why as long as they look the way they do, the action of digital pianos will not feel completely akin to that of acoustic pianos. Larger, higher end models do integrate the acoustic hammer action simply to recreate the key feel. Even higher end models, which are called “silent pianos,” integrate strings as well and are bona-fide acoustic pianos with the added ability to remove the strings from the action and toggle on digital mode in order to provide volume control! But these tend to be even more expensive than acoustic pianos.

These are the basic points to think about when shopping for your piano. To restate what I said at the beginning of the article, it really boils down to the authenticity versus everything else. And the authenticity is usually going to cost you more to get. What you should think about is how important it is to you that the piano truly resembles an acoustic. Are you a classical piano student looking at a long road of perfection and possibly a career as a concert performer?

Then a digital piano is probably not what you want to be practicing on, even as a temporary substitution. I would suggest taking financing an acoustic and using your relatively small budget of cash as the down payment. If this is not necessarily what you’re going for, then perhaps a digital reduction is all you really need. For most people, it is.

Most of us are quite enchanted by the magic of guitar. The mesmerizing tune and sweet tingling of the guitar strings have enamored many a man who has later moved on to become musical legends in their individual niche. There is a roster of famous and successful guitarists who have mastered this enigmatic art of music.

Amongst the many legendary stalwarts, Jimi Hendrix undoubtedly tops the list of profiles of famous guitarists. A genius in its truest sense, the legendary Hendrix was born in 1942. An American by birth, the maestro was a singer and lyricist, and is considered around the globe as one of the most influential and enigmatic personas in the ambit of rock music. One of the milestones in his career was his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival which raised him to instant fame in the United States and was followed by many accolades.

Besides earning a huge name and fame for himself through his forte as a great singer and musician, the legendary maestro also improvised the art of rock music in his own signature way, and he incorporated a number of innovations and techniques into the older forms of rock and jazz music. Quite recently, Hendrix was inducted into the USA's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.

The very meaning of rock music becomes insignificant without the mention of B. B. King, the master craftsman in the art of music. An ingenious guitarist and singer-cum-song writer in the American Blues, B.B. King was considered the Third Greatest Guitarist of All Time in the 2003 listing of Rolling Stone magazine.

The legendary musician started his journey in the world of music in 1946, and worked in the local R&B radio channel as a vocalist. However, soon after this he began recording under big names and became a prominent figure among the best musicians in the R&B music scene. Some of his greatest all time hits during this period include, "Whole Lotta Love," "Every Day I Have the Blues," "You Know I Love You," and "Please Accept My Love." Amidst his many achievements as a successful singer and composer, is included his most recent felicitation at the Three Deuces Building in Greenwood, Mississippi, for his maiden in radio broadcasting. Also, a grand memorial in the name of B. B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center is all set to be inaugurated on September 13, 2008, in Indianola, Mississippi.

Robert Johnson is another of the famous names in the world of guitar and its magic. Born on May 8, 1911, as Robert Leroy Johnson, the veteran guitarist was one of the brightest stars in the entire Delta Blues group. The period between 1936 and 1937 saw him in great guns when he claimed and proved his forte as a brilliant guitarist and lyricist, as well as an awesome singer. Often regarded as the "Grandfather of Rock-and-Roll," Robert Johnson is believed to have been a great influence in the world of rock music, inspiring many legends of the same genre, including Bob Dylan, The Allman Brothers Band, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Black Keys, and many others. Eric Clapton, another legend of the same kind, has called Johnson "the most important blues musician who ever lived."

The NAMM Show is considered the largest music products trade show in the world, its only major competition being the Musik Messe in Frankfurt. It is held every January in Anaheim, California, USA at the Anaheim Convention Center. The January 2008 show had 1,560 exhibitors and a record-breaking 88,100 attendees. The NAMM Show is not open to the general public, only to members of the music trade.

The acronym NAMM originally stood for the National Association of Music Merchants, but has evolved from a national entity representing the interests of music products retailers to an international association including both commercial, retail members and affiliates. Therefore, the long form of the name is no longer used, and it is simply known as NAMM, the International Music Products Association.

Each Winter NAMM Show is heavily covered by the music-industry press. Thousands of new-product introductions and demonstrations are made at Winter NAMM, making attendance by trade journalists a necessity. Some publications, such as Music Trades [1], publish special NAMM issues for distribution at the show. NAMM also produces a show directory and a daily news magazine called Upbeat, for distribution at the convention center and at local hotels.

Among music-trade attendees, the NAMM Show is an exhausting ritual. The Anaheim Convention Center is one of the world's largest, and NAMM (since 2007) completely fills all the available exhibit space, necessitating miles of walking to cover all the exhibits. NAMM is also colloquially called "the world's loudest trade show"[2], although this monicker is also assigned to the E3 Expo and other shows involving entertainment. Despite severe regulations on the permissible noise level, sound level meters carried by NAMM personnel routinely exceed the 85 dBA maximum throughout most of the main exhibit hall, simply from the constant background noise. The association’s other show, Summer NAMM, was hosted by Austin, Texas at the end of July, 2007. The smaller summer show is approximately one third the size of the Winter NAMM Show and focuses more on industry meetings and professional development courses than products. Recent reports indicated that the Summer NAMM show has suffered from declining attendance, as it has been cycled between Nashville TN, Austin TX and Indianapolis IN during successive years. [5] [6]

OCMA's works hard all year to give musicians an opportunity to get some exposure.

Congratulations to all the winning bands, nominees and performers for representing Orange County.

It certainly isn’t about whether you take home an award; it’s about taking the next step of your musical careers.

It’s a chance to promote yourselves,make new connections and use our resources to get a good paying gig the next time you’re trying to book your band at a venue.

We are just a springboard to the next level! Thanks again to our numerous sponsors who helped us with the production of the show.

The Orange County Music Awards is proud to present its seventh annual music awards show that gives emerging artists a voice in the local "OC" music scene.

The OCMAs were the first to help promote local musicians and to showcase the mass musical talent found in the community.

Don't be fooled by any other imitations, the OCMAs rock!

Much like the Grammy's the OCMAs are designed to showcase and award talent found in all musical genres.

Performances at the awards show will feature a few winners from last year's categories.

Over 25 awards will be handed out to winners representing everything from "Best Pop Rock" to "Best Jazz."

The OCMAs also like to recognize businesses and supporters of Orange County music
by inviting them to participate in the event.

The awards show is about bringing people and community together to celebrate the diversity of music found right in our own backyard.

Big Guns Come Out for Guitar Players Ball

There’s a heavy Line-up for the Guitar Players Ball taking place during the 2008 Winter NAMM Show. Blabbermouth reports that George Lynch (ex-Dokken, Lynch Mob), Dave Meniketti (Y&T), Warren DeMartini (Ratt), Gilby Clarke (ex-Guns N' Roses) and Tracii Guns (L.A. Guns) are among the musicians who will take part in the the Guitar Players Ball on January 17 at the Galaxy Theater (3503 South Harbor Blvd) in Santa, Ana, California.

Band Bio:

"Instant Replay" began at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, California. Jim Mutschler and Brian Brehm were part of the school band and Dweighn Secrist was in the choir.

The band was origionally called "The Surf City Boys".The band was the first tribute band to impersonate the Beach Boys, complete with 5 part harmonys, pin stripped shirts, white pants and all the schtick of the Beach Boys. After a well received performance at a school talent show, they entered a talent show for Surf City..Huntington Beach, California. The band took first prize.

Bill Medley of "The Righteous Brothers" was in the audience and he hired the band on the spot for several shows at his night club. Mr. Medley then called the entertainment department at Knotts Berry Farm and arranged a meeting for the band. The Surf city Boys spent the next 4 years performing their tribute to the Beach Boys at Knotts Berry Farm. At one of the shows, John Stamos came up and played with the band and has remained good friends ever since.

It was'nt long before a representative from Disneyland's entertainment department came calling. They started to groom and prepare the band for employment at Disney's Club Buzz stage. At that time the band offered the band name, "Surf City", to the "Surf City Allstars" and then became known as "Instant Replay". The band specialized in costumed tributes to the Surfin' 60's, Classic rock, Disco and 80's..every set was a different era in costumes.

Jeff Woodhouse relocated his band from Olympia, Washington to Los Angeles. After several years of success with his band, an agent had told him of a vacancy in "Instant Replay"...he was a great addition to the group. Three years ago Disney put out a call for all the southern California surf bands to compete for 3 openings at "Disney's California Adventure" park. Out of 9 bands "Instant Replay", "Surf Party" and "The Surf City Allstars" took the honors.

The band has been enjoying our stay at Disney's California Adventure" ever since. On March 19th, 2006..John Stamos invited all of the top surf band musicians over the past 40 years to his hill top home in Beverly Hills for the ultimate surf jam... sponsored by Gibson Guitars. Other groups heard of it and were invited as well.

Among those to perform were "The Beach Boys", "Pappa Doo Run Run", "The Cowsills", "The Surf City Allstars", "America", Doug Fieger of "The Knack" and "Instant Replay". It was truley a one of a kind evening that won't soon be forgotten..Thank you, John....from your friends in "Instant Replay" .

Local Rockers Aim for Best Effect!

The circle is now complete for LA-based rockers The Cauze, a hard commercial rock band with a melodic style. Finishing up a photo shoot, they had a few minutes to talk with All Access Magazine.

The band’s founder, Jeff Ellis, is also the lead vocalist and guitarist. Ellis is joined by Joel Ellis – rhythm guitarist and back-up vocals, Kevin Crider – bassist and back-up vocals, and newest member Bobby Richards, whose thunderous pounding on drums completes their current lineup. Wasting no time, The Cauze has been busy putting the final touches on their first self-titled CD, which is set for release this summer, 2007!

First, thanks for giving us a few minutes of your time, guys. Now let’s get down to it. How many tracks will there be on your new CD?

Jeff: We have 13 originals; we’ll probably put 8 to 10 on the CD that we feel good about.

What’s in the future for The Cauze, besides the obvious — hard work and dedication?

Jeff: The future: Lots of shows! How about Staples Center? And we’d also take the Gibson Amphitheater, too, any day!

On that note, what kind of dates are you guys playing right now?

Jeff: We shoot for Friday and Saturday nights usually. The Pitcher House in Hermosa Beach is a great place for us to do a warm-up show. We do kind of an original/cover night there, mixing in cover songs that we grew up with, such as Dokken, UFO and some Judas Priest with our originals. It’s fun!

That really relates to your promo CD release that features 3 tracks, on which we hear some “heritage” elements, maybe from the ‘80s hard-rock days. Has anybody ever referred to you as an ‘80s-type rock band?

Jeff: Yes, people have said we sound like we’re kind of along the lines of commercial rock, as opposed to Y&T, let’s say. Some people have said that my lead vocals have the tones of Paul Stanley of KISS.

Bobby: People also appreciate the band because of the vocal harmonies. Bands don’t harmonize anymore. It’s a good thing to be able to harmonize, and be able to pull it off live.

Do you also sing, Bobby?

Bobby: No, I just bang the beat, keeping it together in the background, and save my singing for the shower, where it belongs!

Jeff, you’ve said that your lead vocals and your ability to harmonize probably came naturally from your church days and your prior band experiences, so we’ll probably get a lot of that solid, soulful singing on the new release, right?

Jeff: Oh, yeah.

So who would you say are your biggest influences?

Jeff: My influences are bands like Journey, and guitarists like Neil Schon and Michael Schenker. I learned how to play and how to bend strings by listening to Michael Schenker’s vibrato, growing up. We’ve been told that our three-part harmonies, live, remind people of Stryper’s vocals.

How about Extreme?

Jeff: I’d say that Extreme is probably more on the progressive-funk side than us, while we’re more melodic and commercial. That’s the thing with this band: We can pull off a metal tune and a fast commercial hard-rock tune, and go straight to a ballad that people wouldn’t even suspect us of doing. Diversity – I think that’s what separates us, to be able to go from one extreme to another, and be more versatile than other bands that are going to do just straight metal songs or punk songs. We have a lot of dynamics.

Do you have a favorite club that’s been particularly good to you, or that you favor for the vibe?

Jeff: As I said, I look forward to playing the Pitcher House, because it’s more of a casual setting. It’s a local pub, about 200 capacity, but the atmosphere there is really cool and relaxed. It’s a great warm-up venue. But my favorite place to play would be the Galaxy in Santa Ana. The sound there is great, and it’s a nice venue holding 1100 or 1200 people, and the ambience about the place makes it great. When you get onto the Sunset Strip, The Whisky and the other clubs, it seems so rushed. You’re on and off stage, you’re pushing everything, you don’t have a lot of time to warm up, and the sound’s not always great. I’d say that the Galaxy Theater is one of my most favorite places to play.

Is the Galaxy where you’ve planned your CD release party?

Bobby: Not sure yet... maybe. Anything is possible... why not the Staples Center!

Kevin, what’s your take on today’s rock scene, compared to a few years ago?

Kevin: Here in L.A., with a lot of the bands that I go to see on the Strip, it’s very noisy, with a lot of growling vocals. And that’s what separates us: We’ve got a lot of melodic vocals, a lot of harmonies and dynamics, not what you really expect to hear on the Strip. What we’ve seen lately is a lot more noise, and a different quality of music. There’s not a lot of melodic music anymore.

So give it to us straight: Can we safely say that your CD won’t have a lot of growls or “screamo” singing?

Jeff: No, the screams will only be coming from the females in the front row at our shows!

Do you plan to follow up your CD release with a video? We’ve heard talk about a certain upcoming video production in the works...?

Jeff: It’s in the making too, and is basically going to be a DVD about how the band got started. How we brought the new members into the band, the places that we’ve performed, the people that we meet, and the stuff that we’re doing with All Access Magazine, all rolled up into a complete circle. Our fans will be able to shout out a few words about their feelings on The Cauze too!

Where and when will your CD be available?

Jeff: We are aiming for this summer and plan to have it available on our website at www.thecauzeband.com, CD Baby, NewArtistOnline and wherever we can. We have a 3-song demo now we are shopping around to get a distribution deal. We would like to distribute it overseas, and of course then get the band over there to tour!

When you say “overseas,” where specifically do you mean?

Jeff: We’re thinking Europe — the U.K., Germany, Sweden, and so forth, with all the big festivals they have over there.

What are The Cauze’s instruments of choice?

Jeff: My Fender Stratocaster. Joel: My Les Paul. Kevin: An Olympic bass. Bobby: I’m the guy in Venice with the boxes and the bucket, ha-ha! But other than that, I use DWs, Drum Workshop drums.

Any endorsements for the band?

Jeff: Right now, we’ve got a couple of online possibilities that we’ve been working on. Ernie Ball wants to do an endorsement deal, and so does B.C. Rich. Bobby has a drumstick endorsement with Silver Fox Percussion.

Ernie Ball would be an interesting option. They are tied into all kinds of events and tours, not to mention the obvious music stores. Doesn’t he do that Battle of the Bands? Would you guys be a part of that?

Jeff: Heck yeah. We’d jump into any Battle of the Bands! Bring it on! To get up onstage with any band, to show them, “This is what we’ve got,” to say to the people, “You be the judge” - go ahead, put us on stage!

Jeff, as a lead singer, are there any exercises or any particular care you take to maintain your voice?

Jeff: Yes, I use honey, hot tea, and drink a lot of water, combined with a lot of vocal warm-ups before we play.

So you don’t tear up the Sunset Strip the night before, pillage and smoke all kinds of cigarettes?

Joel: No. Once you become a rock star you can do that, and there’s the difference, because we’re still trying!

Kevin, refresh our memory please. Where did you hail from originally?

Kevin: I’m from the San Francisco Bay area, and I spent six years in the Seattle area, rockin’ up there, and this is important for me, as far as my movement goes. I played the most gigs up north, and saw the scene die up there as well. I wrote a book before I moved up there [Seattle], called “Where Have All the Rock Clubs Gone?” The scene was dying in the Bay Area, so I moved up to Seattle, but it was all changing to casinos. You had to have female singers, horn sections, and that was veering away from the rock scene, so I said, “That’s it, I’m on my way to L.A.!”

How long ago was that?

Kevin: Two years ago.

How did the book do?

Kevin: Good! Everybody liked it.

Bobby, it seems you said something about learning to play with Vinny Appice?

Bobby: Yes. I have been playing drums a long time, but after I was honored to meet him, I did recently take lessons with him for about eight months. Vinny gave me a few good tips and pointers, which have definitely helped a whole lot. I’m a Jersey boy born and raised, graduated high school with Bon Jovi and Skid Row. We were in junior high school battles of the bands, playing “Smoke on the Water” and “Stairway to Heaven,” and I had the honor of playing with all of them. Then I came out here and hooked up with Chris Holmes of WASP, which was a lot of fun.

Jeff, any big names that you’ve played with, any particularly cherished memories? And how did you learn to play guitar?

Jeff: Well, back in the day, in high school, when I first started playing, the other guitar player in my band was Rob Hotchkiss, founding member of Train. I played for many years with him in high school, and I also gave guitar lessons to the guy who played bass in Train. Those are fond memories, but actually the best memories I have are playing with The Cauze, and playing with the national acts we’ve worked with, like Y&T and Steve Pearcy. I was basically self-taught, learned to play by ear and never took a lesson in my life. I’ve been playing for 25 years.

Joel?

Joel: I’ve been playing about 20 years, and I actually took lessons for quite a while from a couple of good L.A. guitar players.

Kevin?

Kevin: I’ve been performing for about 28 years, am self-taught, and can’t read a musical note.

Now, with regard to self-promotion, of course you have your own website, www.thecauzeband.com, MySpace, etc. What other marketing efforts are you currently involved with?

Jeff: All of those goodies, and t-shirts, and of course we’re always looking for Street Team help, so if any of you cute-looking girls out there have a couple of hours you wanna donate, log on to the website, and we’ll set you up with some stickers and some promo CDs, and you can hit the street, ladies!

Bobby: The band is willing to do interviews anytime. Internet, phone, radio, text message... just kidding! Seriously, we love it, love it all, so bring it on!

You have a big show coming up, right?

Jeff: Yes, we are the supporting act for Y&T, Sat. April 28th at the Galaxy Theater. And the week before, Saturday April 21, we perform at the 29 Palms Marines Base, supporting the US troops. Then we headline The Pitcher House in Hermosa Beach that very night. That’s going to be one crazy day of rock n’ roll!

But if any of our San Fernando Valley fans want to catch us, we’re also supporting a charity event for Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, Saturday April 7th at Harpers Bar & Grille. Again, we are the supporting act for headliners and members of HEAVEN and EARTH (Stuart Smith, Richie Onori and Keith St. John), THUNDHERSTRUCK (Dyna Shirasaki, Andrea Zermeno and Stephanie Leigh). This event, “The Bunny Hop,” starts at 7 PM, followed by an all-day Rock-N-Roll car show! The best deal is, it’s “all ages,” so hop on over to Harpers and hang out with us a bit. It’s for a great cause!

So the future looks pretty bright for The Cauze?

Bobby: Yes. Opening up for Nickelback or Bon Jovi would be nice too. We’re working on it.

Jeff: But first things first, like finding the right people for the band. Now we feel we’ve got the right folks with the right state of mind, with the right dedication, and “The Circle Is Complete.” We all enjoy playing the music we’re playing, and that’s what we’re in it for — we’re not here to sell out, and we can’t write anything that doesn’t come from our hearts!

Do you have any final shout-outs or words of advice for our local readers, music fans, or maybe the rocker kids in high school that are just now learning about what you do?

Bobby: As long as we’ve been doing this, the message has been, “Don’t give up. Keep going, if this is what you love and it’s in your heart.”

Jeff: On the same subject, keep writing, keep playing what you want to play. We have fans who are 40 and fans who are 14, and I think it’s all coming around again. As commercial as our music is, you can’t listen to it and say it’s bad. Anyway, stick to your guns and stay true to what you believe in.

Well, it’s been great talking with The Cauze, and we’re looking forward to a great show at the Galaxy on April 28th. You also take bookings through your website, right?

Jeff: You got it.

2007 Orange County Music AwardsSaturday, March 31 7pm -

The Grove Theatre, Anaheim

What do folk, pop, rock, punk, jazz, electronic, roots, hip-hop, blues, hard-core and country artists have in common? All have a musical voice as part of the Sixth Annual Orange County Music Awards, to be held March 31 at the Grove Theatre.

The OC Register writes "I think the OCMA is giving Orange County music a voice. You don't have to wait for unsigned artists to be discovered (by a major label) to know there is great music out there."

Martin Brown produces the show as well as The IEMA (Inland Empire Music Awards) , and expects to top last year's 500-plus entries. OCMA judges include music critics from local publications, as well as representatives from Warner/Elektra/ Atlantic, Virgin Records and Universal Entertainment. About 25 awards will be handed out, and 10 local acts will perform live.

SIXTH ANNUAL ORANGE COUNTY MUSIC AWARDS, AT THE GROVE OF ANAHEIM, MARCH 31, 2007

The OCMA is an excellent opportunity for local bands to receive recognition and exposure for all of their hard work during the year. With more than 25 awards being handed out, dozens of local bands and solo artists will be honored.

There will also be live performances from more than ten local acts, winners from the 2006 show.In categories from Best Jazz to Best Metal, the whole musical spectrum will be covered. The show is a celebration of the local music scene. It is equal parts party, networking opportunity and a chance for major media exposure.

Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8.Tickets are $20.
